::::The Elimination Diet::::
OK, why the elimination diet?
I know, I JUST mentioned in the last post that I don’t believe in diets! Well, this is a little different. This is the diet I went on to find out if I had an allergy to certain foods. Well, turned out, I was allergic to gluten!
It was this diet that saved my life. If I hadn’t gone on this diet for one month, I would not have never found out that all my health issues from a young age had to do with a gluten allergy.
I am sharing this with you in the case you find yourself sick most of the time, or not feeling well. This can include feeling lethargic, diarrhea, having headaches, feeling bloated or puffy most of the time, or experiencing brain fog, just to name a few.
The elimination diet is to find out if you have any food allergies. This is NOT a diet to loose weight, although you may feel like you have.
“Elimination diets are a really useful tool to get to the root of what might be stimulating dysfunction in the body,” says Dave Rakel, M.D., the founder and director of the University of Wisconsin Integrative Medicine Program.
“They’re also less likely than medications to cause long-term harm. Rather than jump straight to a medication to control heart burn or gastrointestinal symptoms, he says he prefers this more natural and in many cases more sustainable approach.”
This is only for those wanting to do the Elimination Diet. Read the instructions to prepare yourself. I encourage you to start this after the Holidays where you can give yourself the time and space to do it.
The Elimination Diet Detoxification Program is designed to improve your health by detoxing, supporting the immune system, and finding the root of your ailment. It is a 2 month process where you will eliminate all allergens from your diet for one month, and then re introduce one allergen at a time for one week at a time. During this process, you will also take supplements that support your immune system adding vital nutrients to fix any damage that has already happened in the body.
In the beginning of the program, you may experience some bloating, headaches, fatigue, and possibly mood swings. This is a reaction as your body is detoxing. (Detox symtoms)
Towards the end of the detox you will start to experience increased energy, improved digestion, healthy weight loss, and a sense of balance and control over your dietary habits, and a feeling of Wellness.
Show yourself compassion through out this process. You are going to have some good days and some not so good days. Trust that you are on the road to healing, know that it is a process, and you will feel better. YOU ARE DOING GREAT!!!
Keys to Success
Timing – Choose a period of time to do the elimination diet detox when you can minimize work and social obligations, decrease physical activity and get plenty of rest.
Preparation – Before you begin, gather all the items you will need and be sure you understand your plan. Buy the supplements, go grocery shopping, and familiarize yourself with the self-treatments.
Motivation – Consider your goals and make a personal commitment to yourself.
Relaxation – The diet, and supplements are designed to increase your body’s detoxification physiology. By resting and lowering external demands, you will help your body to focus its energy on these tasks. Try to plan for some time spent in nature, too.
Inner Work – This is a great time for mental and emotional cleansing, as well as physical. Plan to take time each day to do journaling, meditation, yoga, qi gong, prayer or any spiritual or relaxing practice that you are comfortable with. You may find sense of peace that you haven’t felt in a while. The following suggestions should be followed throughout the entire program to help through the discovery of what you may be allergic to as well as the detox process.
Mealtime – Each meal should be eaten calmly. Chew everything slowly and thoroughly. Take a moment to be grateful to the earth, animals, plants, farmers, truck drivers, grocers, etc. that have made your meal possible.
Fluids – Drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of filtered water every day. Filtered is best because you want to minimize your exposures while you are doing your cleanse. Other liquids (except for herbal teas) do not count towards this total. Caffeine is highly discouraged. Your body needs clean water throughout the day to hydrate tissues and aid the kidneys in elimination.
Elimination – At a minimum, you should be moving your bowels once per day, urinating every 2 hours during the day, and sweating daily. Your liver will increase its detoxification and it is important that your other organs are eliminating.
Movement – In order to maintain good circulation, it is important to move your muscles and joints every day. Light activity, like walking or stretching, is best during the detox.
Sleep – Your body repairs and heals during sleep, so be sure to get at least 8 hours. If you can fit them into your schedule, naps are great during this program.
Fluids: Be sure to include a total of 8-10 glasses of water.
